If you save the task recording to RapidValue, the recorded steps are added to the related activity. These steps aren’t editable in RapidValue. To edit the recorded steps, re-record the task recording.
Usually, the steps, as recorded by the Task recorder, need some rewrite/polishing.
Some basic rules to apply to step descriptions are:

  • Remove all references to data (specific record, field input, etc.)
  • It can be useful to make recorded steps clearer, by adding extra references to form elements. For example: On the General tab, in the Name field, … (where the task recorder only recorded: In the Name field, …)
  • Sometimes, in case of enum fields, a specific value is required. If you’ve done the recording properly, you have already selected this value. However, this isn’t shown by default in the task recorder. So, you must select the proper display option for the step.
  • In the steps, often, you do not record each and any field/button/…. However, you can make some exceptions on this rule. But, only do so if it is required to go on with the next steps or if it is a ‘decisive’ field.
  • If required, add an introduction text or general description to steps. You can do so in the Title field.
  • You also have the option to add notes to each step.
  • Remove all redundant steps. Examples are:
    • Steps related to selecting a record in a grid. This often results in more than one step, while but one step is needed.
    • Wrong clicking during recording.

Sometimes, buttons, fields, or forms are developed that must be explained in an existing task recording. You can insert steps in an existing task recording. Officially, before you click Insert step, you must navigate to the form where you want to restart recording. However, often, this doesn't work properly:

  • For some unknown reason, when you want to insert steps, the clicked elements are not recorded. Usually, there's no need to rerecord the full task recording. The simplest way to solve this: start from the D365 F&SCM landing page with the workspace tiles, click Insert step, and navigate to the desired form. You get some redundant steps recorded, which you can delete when you finished recording.
  • Inserting steps in a sub-task, usually doesn't go well. the newly recorded steps often are added as 'main' steps and not as sub-task steps. So, don't hesitate to rerecord the whole subtask. Make sure to copy the step info from the original recorded steps to the same newly recorded steps.

When you have finished editing the task recording, you can again save it to RapidValue. Always check the result on the activity preview.
Also make sure to save the task recording to your PC and as developer recording for back-up purposes.
